Annual report on open access in Sweden

Good morning EDCH community. I post this here as there is no category dedicated to books. Our colleague Niels Stern shared a report from the National Library of Sweden (KB) with recommendations on books. Here is the summary, translated in english. You can see that there is a piece dedicated to the Diamond OA model for books!

Open access policies for books

The guidance and recommendations presented by the PALOMERA project should be implemented by public actors such as research performing organisations and research funding organisations. The recommendations can also guide other actors such as publishers and service providers.

Diamond open access

Diamond open access should be prioritised in terms of financial support for openly accessible books to avoid a trend towards dependence on BPCs. This can be achieved, for example, by developing models to support Swedish diamond publishing, but also through consortium agreements with actors who already have or are developing collective funding models. This should be done in collaboration between key actors such as the national diamond open access node, research funders, the Bibsam consortium and KB.

Responsibility for costs

The costs of open access to books are often significantly higher than for articles in journals. Researchers also need to seek special funding for this, as these costs are rarely covered by publishing agreements similar to those signed centrally for article publication. The national guidelines for open science state that a specific strategy for how costs are to be managed should be developed in collaboration between research performers and research funding organisations.
