Funding Diamond Open Access: the Diamond Funding Navigator

How to fund Diamond OA? :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed:

Currently in public beta phase, the Diamond Funding Navigator provides an overview of initiatives for the collective financing of Diamond Open Access journal publications worldwide.

Looks like an interesting tool for institutions wishing to support Diamond Open Access financially AND for Diamond Open Access consortia to share their financing offers more widely!

And for a bit of background reading, why not download / read Consider your options: explore the different funding or revenue streams for Diamond Open Access.

This list provides an overview of different funding mechanisms that Diamond Open Access publishers and service providers can use to acquire financial or other resources needed for their OA diamond operations or development.

Hi Anna, thank you for sharing this very helpful initiative!

I had two questions to better understand how it works in practice:

  1. If I understand correctly, institutions or consortia currently funding Diamond OA initiatives can use the platform to make their offers visible. Is the idea that other organisations might discover these and decide to co-fund or join in supporting them?
  2. And from the perspective of a journal or publishing initiative: if I’m looking for funding and find a listed offer, is there any way to know whether that offer is open to supporting additional journals or series?

Maybe @xvanedig, you know more about this as it is supported by TIB .

Thanks in advance!

Thank you, both, for drawing attention to our tool! As the person responsible for the Diamond Funding Navigator at TIB, I took this as perfect opportunity to register for the forum

As to your questions, Marion:

  1. You are absolutely right that the intention is (1) to improve the visibility of offers and (2) to provide institutions with a simple overview to make it easier for them to decide on funding. In our experience, many libraries are willing as well as able to contribute to Diamond OA financially, but a central point of information of demands and funding options has been lacking.

  2. Very interesting question! With its rather narrowly defined objective, we have initially contented ourselves with the fact that representatives of publications can indirectly use the information to make contact with the consortia relevant to them. But I find it worthwhile to consider how we can map this preceding phase of the inclusion of publications into the offers. There is a need for this as well, I’m pretty sure.

While I’m at it, I hope it’s okay if I refer to our blog post about the tool.

Needless to say that we are excited about any further feedback from the community on the beta version, so thanks again for welcoming the Diamond Funding Navigator so warmly here!

Hi Anita! Thanks a lot for your reply, and great to see you here!

I really appreciate the clarification. The tool clearly fills a gap, and it’s great to see focus on both visibility and supporting institutional decision-making.

I also agree that mapping the pre-inclusion phase would be very valuable. If anyone else has input, please feel free to continue the discussion: this space is open for feedback on the tool!
